Floating Star

San Francisco, 2025

Introducing the Floating Star, a fun and engaging educational toy designed to teach kids how to float on their backs. Shaped like a cheerful starfish, this toy not only appeals to children’s imaginations but also serves as a visual guide for the proper body position needed for floating. Originally designed with simplicity in mind, it has been enhanced with interactive features to keep children engaged, ensuring they stay motivated while learning essential water safety skills. Whether in the pool or at the beach, the Floating Starfish makes floating a playful and enjoyable experience.

Extensive sketching is essential for designing the right silhouette for the starfish. This allowed me to experiment with different starfish species, sizes, and features to ensure the design is visually appealing, and functional. While sketching it is important to keep the skill that this toy is supposed to help with as the number one priority, otherwise the design could prove to be unsuccessful.

To enhance the toy’s educational and play value, two additional features were incorporated: suction cups for sticking to surfaces and a bubbler that activates when the starfish sinks. These improvements aim to increase engagement and provide a more enjoyable learning experience for young swimmers.
