Why Choose a Starfleet Spacecraft
Designing for Starfleet represents a different approach to innovation than the one commonly used in modern society. Instead of focusing on making money and competing with other companies. Starfleet focuses on human potential, scientific discovery, and improving quality of life. This creates a more utopian approach to design. Instead of focusing on short term profit and competition designers and manufatures have to focus on quality and usabilty. Starfleet exitst in a post scacity world, one where there is no need for planned obsalecance or the goal of making money in the traditional scense. Its technology is designed to expand what people can achieve and solve problems without creating unnecessary limitations. Starfleet also values sustainability above all else in their design practices. Designing For A Brand
Designing a product for an existing brand involves creating a solution that aligns with the brand’s established identity, values, and target audience. The process begins with a deep understanding of the brand’s ethos. In this context the brand is the fictional organization Starfleet. Which is an organization not concerned with profits or sales, but instead exploration and the wellbeing of others. So naturally a product that would be designed by Starfleet would exclude planned obsolescence and inefficient features.
Making the Prtotoype Model
For this prototype, I used two different types of foam. I initially used a low-density foam to create several iterations and experiment with the correct size and shape of the projector. After determining the ideal form, I moved to a higher-density foam for the final model. I carved the overall shape using a hot wire cutter and then added smaller details with a Dremel tool. Once the shape was finished, I sealed the foam with several thin layers of Bondo to create a smooth and durable surface, sanding between each layer to refine the finish. I also repurposed a cap from an old super glue bottle, cutting and modifying it to create the projector's lens. After the model was fully constructed and prepared, I then airbrushed and hand-painted it using Starfleet's signature brand colors to give the final prototype a finished appearance.
